Mao to Now Exhibition...too bad it's in Minnesota:(

Mao to Now Exhibition in Goldstein Museum of Design in Minnesota The Oriental by Wu Haiyan

'Wu Haiyan's all black and white designs use geometric shapes and diagonal lines, as well as plenty of frills and ruffles. The result is some jaw dropping pieces that harken back to early 20th century lines with 21st century pizzaz.' (blogs.citypages.com)

By Wang Yiyang

'Wang Yiyang's designs featured in the exhibit have a very urban feel, but still utilize shapes, often disarmingly so, like the t-shirt with the very large blue rectangle attached to the front, or the long pleated plaids skirt paired with a puffy printed jacket.' (blog.citypages.com )

This exhibition looks and sounds really interesting, wish I could go but too bad its half way across the world , nevertheless its nice I found out about it.

Here's a description about the exhibition from the Goldstein Museum of design website:

Chinese culture changed drastically between 1949 and the present. The evolution of Chinese fashion reflects how the culture transformed. “Mao to Now” is divided into three periods: pre Mao (1912 to 1948), the Mao era (1949 to 1977), the era of the nondescript Mao suit and the post-Mao era (1978 to present), which demonstrates how, after Mao, Chinese fashion began to exhibit an increasingly dramatic melding of Chinese and Western design expression.

The work of four top Chinese fashion designers will be included in the exhibition: Wu Haiyan, Liu Canming, Wang Yiyang, and Zhang Da. In addition to the items of dress and accessories, the exhibition will feature photographs by high-profile Chinese journalists and photographers to illustrate the differences between the periods.
