The journey of ..... (Part 1)

From the original shape of the robe and after quite a few experiments and draping on the stand I quite like this one which was simple fold from the corners to the shoulder line, which I thought created this great from of it being short in the front and long in the back also this volume to the garment. Also there's a simplicity to it and I think with the right fabric it could be modern and interesting design.

Where I Would love to sell my collection if I could !!!

I can see mt collection being sold in Miss Selfridge as it fits my target market of young ladies from 18 to 25. The brand has been in the retail industry since 1966 and accquired the high profile of a clothing line that emphasizes on trendy and sty6lish clothing for women. Then in 1994 joined the arcadia group which also consists the ever so popular Topshop also Dorothy Perkins and others. Miss Selfridge has over the years an aura of awareness in women's clothing, allowing them to be easy fit, stylish, up-to-date and of an exquiste form of quality for the high street. This is what I want my collection to embody as well, also being freash and young like Miss Selfridge's clothing where they are simply not afraid to have array of styles, colours, textures and design ideas. Mary Katrantzou

Mary Katrantzou quite new designer but she sure has her signature. Her garment designs for previous collection has been quite simple while having her take on the textile design but her spring/summer 2011 ready to wear collection is so charming as she says "With this collection, I wanted to put the room on the women, rather than the women in the room" and I can clearly see what she means. I love the boldness in her collection but still having this feminine elegance as well as her use of bold colours which has been continuous in her work. There is a freshness in her designs which are contemporary but marketable.

Actually trying to create ideas for bottoms !

OK, I admit I m not the biggest fan of trousers and kinda stuck with this mid length silhouette which I think is more flattering and suitable for spring/summer but I know you need to have a range for designs and cannot only be a million dresses! Although I don't think I've ever had a problem with designing a range but because I adapted to designing on the stand I kind of got stuck on what I only doing from the bodice. So I need to push forward and look further !

More Exploring with Calico !

More toiling with calico and developing design ideas. I used the basic shape from the previous robe and just worked about with the shape and experiment with simple drapery. I think there are some interesting forms which I created and I like that there are quite simple ideas.

Oriental Inspired Collections for Spring/Summer 2011

Dries Van Noten's collection consists of plenty of silk robes with a light and simple garments. 'The models were draped in Vietnamese-styled ensembles, kimono-like robes and high Chinese-inspired necklines. All different kind of silks were used for the delicate look, many of which were printed with beautiful blossoming florals.' ( trendhunter.com) For me this collection did have some stunning pieces but on a whole it wasn't amazing and there wasn't anything particularly that special.
Caroline Herrera's collection was inspired by the Korean Traditional dress the hanbok and botanical plated collected in the eighteenth century. To me the collection was beautiful and I personally enjoyed it because I love the Korean hanbok, so to be able to see how it would be inter prated by Herrera was lovely. The collection was elegant but strong and polished with ' the superfluous obi like bows that decorated the bust and waistlines of evening dresses hardy dispelled the disquiet.' (style.com) Louis Vuitton's collection was interesting and almost not what I expected from the fashion house. The collection embraced many different things by ' Jacobs was talking about Art Deco, Art nouveau, orientalism and the first designer he ever worked for Kansai Yamamoto.' (style.com) All I can really say the collection wasn't boring but wasn't exactly my taste, however I did like the use of colour maybe it was a bit too much at some point but I prefer collections to be colourful and exciting than monotone. There were clear signs of inspiration from the Chinese cheongsam but definitely modernised.

Disperse Dye

My tutor told me to dye some traditional fabrics but I could only get a hold of some disperse dye today and thought it would be quite cool to try it out as I've never really done textiles experimentation before. I also wanted to try using the disperse dye on the traditional fabric but didn't really make a difference. Disperse dye is applied to fabric by firstly applying the dye to paper with a design of your choice and then simply putting the paper on top of the fabric and ironing then the dye is transferred to the fabric. In the pictures show the dye painted on top of a Chinese outline pattern and then the outcome after being ironed on to calico. I thought it turned out really nice and intricate pattern, it created a delicate textile.

Paper Art Shop Display

I think Shop displays are one of the key aspect of attracting customers to enter shops but its also can be a display of art. Where it's an installation with different themes and concepts. Like this window shop engaging in paper art which is funky and quite whimsical, which I think would have definitely caught the eyes of some pass buyers. FABRICS

Fabrics samples which I have collected so far. Normally I would look and choose a solid coloured fabrics but as I looked at the Chinese traditional robes from the qing dynasty they used such richly decorated fabrics which i thought are beautiful. So I wanted to incorporated some printed and brocade textiles in my collection to give make my designs more unique. My favourite fabric that I ve collected is the fabric in the forth picture which is a fuchsia coloured Chinese brocade from Borovicks on Berwick street. I love the colour and the dragon and flower patten on the brocade.

Masha Ma ~ Saint Martins graduate debut LFW collection

I discovered a new designer who just recently debuted at London Fashion week with a collection based around white but accented with doses of silver, gold and mint green. The collection is beautiful in detail and simplicity which is what I want my collection to highlight on. I love the use of mixed textures in the outfits and silhouettes, which includes stunning layering with jackets and flowing shirts. Also I adore the use of asymmetric aspects to the collection makes the garment interesting and fresh as she only used muted colours, where white to me is such a crisp colour.

John Galliano for DIOR couture spring/summer 2007

This collection is probably my favourite collection to date its amazing in construction, detail , textile and more. There's so many amazing pieces I would even know where to start. I love the silhouettes and shapes he uses , and of course the colour is stunning! Capturing the pure energy and life in that he's put into this collection but John Galliano is truly a genius as he finds the balance between his extreme design aesthetic with Dior signature lady, creating such beautiful collections. The 2007 couture spring summer collection has so many elements and I love the clear vision on inspiration. Although the collection is not all wearable I think if you toned it down two notches it could be an amazing ready to wear collection !!

Experimenting With Detail

At the first stage of developing design ideas I've been simply playing around with the shape of the collar on traditional Chinese robe to create this layering. I want to use the form to make something simple but unique. I don't want anything too complex as I want my collection to be marketable and for high street shoppers to want and think its simple beauty but I m still in early stages of development and have some way to go into finalising.

RUNWAY on the GREAT WALL

A historic runway show in 2007 showcasing Fendi's 2008 spring/summer collection was an amazing event and marketing tool for the company to advertise to the chinese population as the fashion show was placed on one of their most iconic monument. Not only setting a beautiful scenery but one of the longest runway in fashion history at 1,500 mile.

Experimenting Of The Form

I made up a basic calico shape of the a traditional chinese robe to help me explore and expand on design ideas. I like that the chinese traditonal dress was simple but had interesting detailing to them. As I want my collection to have the same statement with it being simple but beautiful with detailing.

DEFINING

After looking back on my initial research I decided to pick out two features to concentrate on, which I found intriguing. Both are captured from the Chinese culture, I like experimenting with the art of paper cutting and i think this would be interesting to carry out into how I may translate this to fabric and into my collection.
Image Scanned From Sketchbook : Paper cutting by Virginia Man The other aspect of the Chinese culture which drew my attention was the traditional dress during the Qing Dynasty in China. Which can be known as several different names such as Hanfu, Ch'i Fu, Official Court Robes or Dragon Robe. I find the 'robes' remarkable in the richness it presents and I like the simplicity in the design but still accented with the collar & cuff detailing, making it appealing to me.
Image Scanned From The Book: Chinese Textiles: Ming to Ch'ing By Paul Haig & Marla Shelton
So I am now focusing on these two aspects of the Chinese culture for my collection and hopefully the outcome will be extraordinary!

Initial Inspiration

My initial inspiration for my final major project (collection) was 'Ethnic Fusion'. I love culture and different ethnic clothing as it's filled with admiration and heritage of different country. It colourful and energetic to me, but from my tutors looking at the work that I had done, I seemed to have gathered too much. Which sort of left me in a confused position and needing to re-think a lot.

Blood, Sweat & Tears

Fashion is a tough industry, I wonder at times if it suits my personality to be in such a industry but then again there are plenty of different characters in the fashion world. People a born talented and some aren't. I m not so I have to push myself , its hard when you put so much time and effort into your work and to others it just isn't right ! But fashion is subjective and it is what i hate the most, people have different opinions and emotions and they judge your work. So is it simply unfair ! So no matter how much 'blood, sweat & tears' you put in after it's probably the same outcome. I want to do well , therefore I care and get too emotionally attached even though I'm scared I can't handle what's to come this final year. I have to push through and try my best !
